4th After Pentecost
Season after Pentecost
“Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
Matthew 10:37

My hunch—when push comes to shove—is that I’m a typical mainline Protestant in terms of my gut response to the family-values wing of the evangelical church. And yes, I certainly resonate with those (Stanley Hauerwas, anyone?) who would point to a text such as this one to demonstrate the extent to which our Lord appears to espouse a rather unorthodox approach to family values. But, when I pull back from my debate-platform and simply look at my own still growing family (four children, their spouses, seven grandchildren with 3 more enroute), I realize that Christ here speaks to me. And it makes me terribly uncomfortable, which, I suspect, is the whole point.

Lower the walls of defensiveness in our hearts—in my heart—that resist hearing Christ’s challenge to rightly order our loves and our lives. And yes, teach us to live as disciples of You in every dimension of our ever-shifting lives. Amen
