Season after Pentecost
“But if Christ is in you, then the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.”
Romans 8:10-11

It’s not as if there are two parts to us, one a body that dies and the other a spirit that lives. There is only us: a body. And that body is mortal; it dies. But without Christ we were bodies controlled and enslaved by death; in Christ we are bodies under his living lordship. We don’t become immortal. Our bodies suffer; they weaken; they die. We don’t escape the fate that belongs to our humanity. But we die in a new way, as the bodies of those who belong to Christ, alive through Christ’s Spirit. Our bodies, our lives are already the signs of the resurrection yet to be consummated for all—Easter life in the shadow of the cross.

Despite our most frenzied and passionate attempts, we cannot give life to our mortal bodies—but Your Spirit can. Dwell in us, O Holy Spirit, so that, whether in life or in death, whether in our bodies or at their demise, life eternal shines and thrives. Amen
