Easter
“Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.”
Psalm 23:4

If you attend more than a few funerals in the Christian tradition, you will eventually hear Psalm 23 referenced during the service. In the Authorized Version, “the darkest valley” is strikingly translated as “the valley of the shadow of death.” Nonetheless, despite death’s presence, the speaker is fearless. Why? Because God is with them, and God’s shepherd’s crook is going to be more than a match for any evil that might come their way. And that same staff will keep us on the straight and narrow when we inevitably try to wander off on our own. This is a God who may take us to uncomfortable places but will never let us go.

Immanuel, God-with-us, I admit that there are times when I am afraid and uncertain as to where I am going. Come close and remind me that You are here with me. Amen
