Easter
“You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD my whole life long.”
Psalm 23:5-6

The closing image of God in Psalm 23 is that of a host, a host who will remain a host even in difficult circumstances. The assertion of preparing a table in the presence of enemies contains an echo of Psalm 78:19, “They spoke against God, saying, ‘Can God spread a table in the wilderness?’” The answer to that question in Psalm 23 is a resounding, “Yes!” Our God will not only provide but will show us honour by anointing us. We will know God’s goodness and mercy throughout our earthly lives. And after that? We can rest in the assurances given in the Gospel reading from John, touched on in both Monday’s and tomorrow’s reflections.

God Our Provider, I thank You that through You my needs are met. May Your goodness and mercy continue to be evident in my life, today and forever. Amen
