Easter
“While Peter was still speaking, the Holy Spirit fell upon all who heard the word. The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astounded that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles, for they heard them speaking in tongues and extolling God.”
Acts 10:44-46a

There’s a sense in which the shape of Easter’s fifty days can be divided into two different—but profoundly intertwined—narrative arcs. For roughly the first half of this blessed season, the focus is on the Empty Tomb and the rich experience of the Risen Christ through whom Jesus’ first followers were blessed. As we continue to make our passage through this enchanted season, however, the focus shifts from Christ to the Spirit: including the unavoidable acknowledgment of the sign of “tongues” that has so often accompanied moments of Church birth and re-birth over the centuries. The bottom line? The promise of the Spirit serves as a reminder that Easter is not a spectator sport but an encounter that demands our full, Spirit-led participation.

Fill us, dear God, with the same Spirit of life through which the ancient Church blessed Your sacred energies as You touched, transformed, and transfigured all of life. Through Christ! Amen
