Easter
“Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills sing together for joy at the presence of the LORD, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world with righteousness, and the peoples with equity.”
Psalm 98:8-9

Long experience within a few United Church congregations suggests that judgment tends to be a far from beloved word in most of our circles. Nevertheless! Here in Psalm 98, God’s pending judgment is celebrated—I believe rightly celebrated—for its rich promise not only of just-judgment, but for its assurance that it will promote genuine equity: bringing blessing to God’s people Israel but bringing no less rich a blessing to all peoples. Let the floods clap their hands, indeed! Let even the hills sing together for joy at the coming of the just-judge, for joy at the coming of the God of righteousness!

We freely confess in Your presence, dear God, the flawed nature of the justice we seek to enact in our personal and corporate lives. So much evades our understanding! So much confuses and is veiled from our sight—the paths that might truly lead to right reason and just action. And so, we pray for the day when the veils will be lifted from our eyes, and we will see as You see, and participate fully in putting right all that is broken, mending all that awaits Your healing touch. Through Christ, and in the power of Your Spirit! Amen
