Daily Reflection

This is a tricky verse, reflected in the range of choices for those rendering it into coherent English. I much prefer the English Standard Version’s translation of this text: “Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.” The point being made here is far from theoretical. It has to do with our practical mandate as those re-born of God: to express (in tangible ways!) our love for God through a life that seeks to treat all of God’s children with that same measure of love.
