Entering the Christian Story Part I: Do You Know What You're Getting in to?
Home->How to find us

Entering the Christian Story Part I is a six-week series dedicated to the major themes of the Christian Story found in the biblical narratives and passed on through tradition in the present day. It is the opportunity for those new to the Christian Story, those who know it all too well, and those who are somewhere in between, to encounter the story in fresh and engaging ways.

Sessions and Topics:

Oct. 17 - What is the meaning of life?
Oct. 24 - Why aren't things the way they should be?
Nov. 7 - What is God doing about it?
Nov. 14 - What role do we play?
Nov. 21 - Whose world is it?
Nov. 28 - What hope do we live by?

Each session will be structured around a particular question that will be addressed and is pertinent to each theme. We hope to create a safe and positive space for discussion, recognizing that each of us may be coming from different places on the journey of faith. At the same time, we hope to provide a necessary grounding in the basic themes so we might be able to grow and appropriate the Story itself to enrich our daily living as individuals and as church communities.

Each session will run from 6:00-8:00pm. The series will be held at West Point Grey United Church, 4595 West 8th Avenue (8th & Trimble). Click here for the map.

Free food will be provided, and each session will begin with a chance to eat with each other and get to know each other better. If you're able to help with the purchase or preparation of food please contact us or indicate that in the comments section on the registration form.

We hope to make this series especially easy to attend for young families with children.  During each adult session folks from Dunbar Heights United Church will be offering Godly Play, an open ended, inquiring approach to the Christian story for children. Godly Play allows children to explore their relationship with God through stories (parable, sacred story, silence and liturgical action) and play. Children learn the art of Christian language as a tool to explore the important questions in their lives. While parents and other adults will be learning the story, children three and over will be learning the story led by skilled Godly Play teachers. Since each session goes until 8:00pm, which can be late for some children, we suggest that parents bring along pyjamas and other items that can ensure they are "bed ready" before they leave.

The whole series, along with food and child care is offered free of charge, though registration is required, as spaces are limited. Fill out the form below to register or register by phone at 604-827-4301, or by email at foodandfaithubc@gmail.com. Registration deadline October 14th.

Hosted by five Westside United Churches, a working group comprised of Knox United Church, Dunbar Heights United Church, West Point Grey United Church, Trinity United Church and University Hill. Dunbar Heights United Church is providing Godly Play for children, which is a core piece of their regular ministry. West Point Grey is providing the space to make the series possible. University Hill Congregation is providing the series material and leadership.
