Lent
“While the Israelites were encamped in Gilgal they kept the passover in the evening on the fourteenth day of the month in the plains of Jericho. On the day after the passover, on that very day, they ate the produce of the land, unleavened cakes and parched grain. The manna ceased on the day they ate the produce of the land, and the Israelites no longer had manna; they ate the crops of the land of Canaan that year.”
Joshua 5:10-12

Manna was the miraculous bread-food that God provided the Israelites during their wanderings in the desert. It was a surprising gift, never repeated again in the life of Isreal. But once they settled into their new land, the manna stopped. The miraculous gift of manna was replaced by the gift of a home. That was no less miraculous, even though it soon appeared commonplace. Passover, or the celebration of Thanksgiving, or the simple prayers before a meal, are our reminder that the food on our plates is no less a miraculous gift from God than the manna in the wilderness.

For our daily bread, we give You thanks, Giver of all good things. We remember today that what we take for granted is no less a blessing than surprising food in the desert, gift from a generous Saviour. Amen
