Daily Reflection

Lent
“Happy are those whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. Happy are those to whom the LORD imputes no iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no deceit. While I kept silence, my body wasted away through my groaning all day long. For day and night your hand was heavy upon me; my strength was dried up as by the heat of summer. Then I acknowledged my sin to you, and I did not hide my iniquity; I said, ‘I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,’ and you forgave the guilt of my sin.”
Psalm 32:1-5

Our times of confession and acknowledgement of sin are usually solemn, even downbeat, and for good reason: there is nothing to celebrate in our sins. But the Psalmist reminds us that confession leads to happiness: “happy are those…” is said, twice! Silence led to the body wasting away; vocal confession led to forgiveness and happiness. They say that confession is good for the soul; apparently it’s good for your body and mood as well!

Your forgiveness is life itself, O God, renewing heart, mind, body, and soul. May the pain and even shame in confession be transformed into the joy of living in honesty and newness of life, through the sin-bearing love of Jesus Christ. Amen
