Lent
“…in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal through us; we entreat you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.”
2 Corinthians 5:19-20

A Sri Lankan theologian, N. T. Niles, coined the phrase that evangelism is “one beggar telling another beggar where to find food.” That is one of the ways, perhaps the primary one, we join with Paul (who wrote this text) as “ambassadors for Christ.” God is doing the work—and if God does it, it is complete! Ambassadors call attention to what God is doing and has done. Those hearing respond as they choose. In the freedom God gives all, they can choose however they want, accept reconciliation or not. It is up to them—but there is nothing wrong with ambassadors “entreating” them!

We are humbled to be called Your ambassadors, O God. We feel inadequate, unprepared, unimaginative. But when You call, You equip, even in ways not immediately apparent to us. May we be true witnesses to the reconciliation You have already called the world into, especially in those hard places where people seem intent on denying it. Amen
