Lent
“For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”
2 Corinthians 5:21

For Paul, to be “in Christ” almost means to merge our life with Christ: Jesus’ life is our life, just as our lives became his life. Christ shared our life by “becoming sin;” when he died, we died, and that shared sin died with him; when he rose, we rose with him into “the righteousness of God.” Paul is using rich poetry here that is more than mere metaphor or imagination, trying to talk about something that our language cannot quantify but is, nevertheless, very real. In fact, it is the really real. In Christ we have died to sin and have risen up into life with God. Amazing!

Let us recognize our death to sin daily, O God, so we might live and celebrate our rising with Christ into newness of life. He died once, and for all, and now lives with You. The victory is secured. May we, indeed, become the righteousness, the justice, the right relationships that You have won us into, through Christ our Lord. Amen
