Lent
“Now all the tax-collectors and sinners were coming near to listen to him. And the Pharisees and the scribes were grumbling and saying, ‘This fellow welcomes sinners and eats with them.’”
Luke 15:1-2

Hand it to the Pharisees and scribes to concisely and accurately describe Jesus’ ministry: he welcomes and eats with sinners. That is one of the reasons we celebrate the Lord’s Supper so often: we sinners are welcomed to join Jesus at the table. Yes, some may grumble about this (“The church is full of hypocrites!”) but when we taste the bread and lift the cup to our lips, we know the life-giving gift of sharing a meal with Jesus and the people of Jesus.

We are grateful to be invited to Your table, the table of reconciliation, peace, community, love. You did not have to call us, but You did. We join with the Pharisees and tax collectors, those homeless on the byways and highways, the lost and the prodigal, the least and the lowly. We join with all the shunned and forgotten—but not forgotten by You. Holy Parent of us all, thank You! Amen
