Holy Saturday
Holy Week
“The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! My soul continually thinks of it and is bowed down within me. But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope. The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases, his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. ‘The LORD is my portion,’ says my soul, ‘therefore I will hope in him.’”
Lamentations 3:19-24

Holy Saturday—that day between the suffering of the cross and the empty tomb. We live much of our lives in Holy Saturday: recognizing the pain of others, dying daily from our own, personal trials, and burdened with the unfathomable adversities faced by so many in our world. In such a world, the cadence of lament is wholly appropriate. But so is the cadence of trust and confidence, not in us or in our leaders or in “the arch of the universe” but in the One who created and is creating. Holy Saturday is lament, but also great trust and hope. If we are faithful, we will find ourselves here daily.

There is no “silver lining” or “bright side” to the very real suffering of our world, yet You stand alongside, no mere observer but participant to the point of death. Your steadfast love never ceases, Your mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness! Ame
